How many 99ers

And we're just going to leave them without incomes and without job opportunities and without money to spend in their wrecked local economies -- thus making it harder for those economies to generate new jobs?

That's the economic theory this country is going to embrace amid terrible joblessness? The Alarming Growth of 99ers The Columbia Journalism Review's Holly Yeager writes , "In usual times, those who have been unemployed that long make up a small fraction of the unemployment picture.

But these aren't usual times, and the 99ers have become a big part of the story," making up 3 percent of the unemployed in June but 9. Republicans Exacerbate Crisis Measures to extend unemployment insurance have met with staunch resistance from Senate Republicans. Liberal blogger John Cole fumes , "You would think this kind of story would motivate the Democrats, but considering the Republicans have every incentive to make sure more people are miserable, I doubt motivation will help much.

That's the perverse reality. The more Americans who hurt, the more political and philosophical incentive the GOP has to block any attempts to help the economy. I think the issue is bigger than unemployment benefits. Welfare and Medicaid I don't qualify for that either qualification rules have changed dramatically in the last several years.

However, I do qualify for food stamps now but that's it. The above quote was in the article referred to by "homeless unemployment". Can someone explain what this means?? My understanding is that after one receives the 99 weeks then they are dropped from the system , so, if one is dropped, then how do they keep track of that person??

I'm confused on this whole thing!! Anyone ever collect more than 99 weeks? Has anyone collected more than 99 weeks of UI? Maybe on two different claims with a week break somewhere in the mix? I have heard of this happening but wanted to know if anyone else had? Originally Posted by blazertrek Originally Posted by homeless unemployment. It is free and quick. She thinks it's ridiculous that she can't find a job. You feel unwanted. You feel like you don't fit anymore," said Porreca, who lives with her husband in Rockville Centre, N. And nobody seems to be paying attention to any of this. Nobody talks about it. The plight of people who have exhausted all 99 weeks of unemployment insurance available in some states -- the "99ers" -- has received some attention from Congress and the media, but mostly their predicament is regarded as an intractable and pitiful part of a bigger problem.

One obstacle to helping 99ers is a lack of basic data. How many people can't find work after nearly two years of searching? How many 99ers are there? Nobody even knows. The Department of Labor told HuffPost that it does not have the micro-level or individual claimant data to make an accurate estimate.

With federally-funded extended benefits broken into four "tiers," the different number of weeks available in different states, and individual workers' potential stops and starts -- not to mention the congressional lapses in federal benefits -- nobody has figured out a reliable way to track the people who've used 99 weeks of benefits and still haven't found work.

Congress started giving layoff victims extra weeks of federally-funded benefits in July on top of the 26 weeks provided by states.
