It recognises successful completion of secondary education and provides a valuable pathway to tertiary study and employment. A VCE program includes a number of different VCE studies or subjects , with the majority consisting of four units that can be completed over the two years a unit represents one semester or half a year of work.
Units 1 and 2 are typically taken in Year 11, while Units 3 and 4 are usually completed in Year While Units 3 and 4 must be taken as a sequence in a single year, Units 1 and 2 can be taken as single units that need not form a sequence and do not need to be continued into Units 3 and 4. Often students are advised to do the full four units of each study, acquiring foundational knowledge before progressing to Units 3 and 4. Likewise, students are encouraged to begin VET studies at the Unit 1 and 2 level in Year 11 before continuing on at Unit 3 and 4 level in Year To graduate with the VCE, students must satisfactorily complete a minimum of 16 units, although 20 to 24 units is generally the norm.

Grades and study scores are calculated for students who are enrolled in VCE Unit 3 and 4 sequences and elect to complete Graded Assessments. All VCE studies have three graded assessments. The grades are derived from scores for each assessment.
Study scores for VCE units are based on scores for the Graded Assessments and indicate how well the student performed in relation to all others who undertook the study. Fifty is the maximum study score.
For studies with large enrolments or greater , the following table shows the approximate proportion of students who achieve a study score on or above the stated values. Personalised Inspection of Exam Materials application forms are included in the results package sent to each Year 12 student. Find out more about Inspection of Examination Response Materials.
Although GAT results do not count directly towards your VCE results, they play an important role in checking that school-based assessments and examinations have been accurately assessed, and in calculating Derived Examination Scores DES where applicable. If students have done well on the GAT, then their achievements are likely to be high on their school-based assessments and examinations.
If your final examination score is significantly different from the score predicted by the GAT, school indicative grades, other scores for the study, and scores for SACs and SATs, your examination will be assessed again. Scores may go up or stay the same but will not go down as a result of this final check. The calculation for a DES uses all of your available scores in the affected study, and the indicative grade for the examination and the GAT component scores.
